In 2013 I was lucky enough to travel to the Maha Kumbh Mela, a pilgrimage in Allahabad, India which only takes place every 144 years. It was the largest gathering of people in recorded history (120 million visitors according to Wikipedia), which was extremely daunting to intake let alone photograph.
One way I tried to manage this was to see past the dizzying crowds and focus in on specific people that commanded my attention. Later that year I made this mock-up of a book of portraits which hasn’t yet materialized into anything larger. But excited for these to exist in some capacity, and grateful to have been a small part of this less than once in a lifetime event.
